I used to be able to highlight text, press backspace, and have it delete.
All of a sudden, this doesn't work anymore. Of course I can press delete, but
this is more tedious because I have to switch back and forth between the two
buttons for some deletions. How could this have changed on my computer at
home but not at work?

Tools | Options | Edit: "Typing replaces selection." Backspacing is
considered "typing."

ToolsOptionsEdit, restore the check for "Typing replaces selection".
