I'd like to get rid of the icon at the bottom of the screen that shows an
open book and a pen moving accross it

To get rid of the pen, and I mean the pen and not the check mark, uncheck the
boxes/options for checking your document for spelling and grammar errors and
specifically for the ones that say as you type, you good speller you!
