Default Word template opens to show header

How do I set my Word template so it does not open viewing header and footer?
I have to close the header and footer each time I start a document.

You won't see the header or footer in Normal view, so you could switch to
that view, but even if you're in Print Layout view, I suspect you aren't
really "seeing the header" as you think. When you start Word, is the
insertion point in a space with a dotted line around it marked "Header"? If
not, you're not in the header. See
