is there a way to do a find and replace across serveral word documents
without installing 3rd party software

Default word find and replace across several documents

There used to be.

Okay, that was too flip.

Depending on which version of Word you use, you should be able to do a
search in the File: Open dialog for the desired word or phrase. And,
depending on which version you use, you should be able to even specify
formatting in said search. Once the files are located, you then have to open
each one and do your global search/replace in the ordinary way.

I find that in Word 2002 this feature is so buggy as to be unusable. But in
Word 2000 and in 2003, it works fine.
