Default line spacing AROUND font

Hope I'm in the correct group . . .

PC
WinXP Pro (2001 5.1, SP 2)
MS Word 2002

Main problem: a LOT of unneeded 'line spacing' above & below the font
itself, not the whole line (text centered on the page)

Arial Black 48, but same prob with plain Arial
Using FormatBorders and ShadingShadingFill: Gray 40%, Pattern:
Style-Clear, Apply to: Paragraph

Have already checked/tried:
- verified FormatFontCharacter SpacingScale: 100%, Spacing: Normal,
Position: Normal, Kerning: NOT checked
- re-set FormatParagraphIndents and SpacingLine Spacing to Single. Still
puts unwanted line spacing, about 1/2 the capital font size, both above and
below the font
- re-set same to 50, but while the non-text section is fine, the text
section is literally vertically larger than the rest of the line. Example:

.............*******.............
----------text here-----------
............. . . . . . . ..............
_______*******

(Ignoring the dashes and underlines, imagine the dots and asterisks are the
outside border of the shading)

Cannot understand why the shading wants to 'bulge out', as it were,
above/below the text.

Of course, does not show onscreen, just happens when it prints out.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Default line spacing AROUND font

The amount of vertical space occupied by a font if fixed in the font
definition. What will print for a given font should be displayed in print
preview.
If you want to shade the background less than the height of the font space,
use a filled and borderless text box set behind the text.

Perfect idea! Thank you SO much! I keep forgetting with MS programs one
must think "outside the box".
