Default Cannot open word

I have loaded office onto my new laptop straight from microsoft & have only
just started to have problems with word, all other apps OK. Will not open at
all, just locks up,tries to open but gets no further than the egg timer. When
I close laptop, the next time it tries to open in safe mode, however as it
virus checks it locks up again! Any ideas this is very frustrating? Tried
start, run winword / r as suggested from another answer.
Thanks
