Default opening or saving Off Word doc my computer freezes up. what's up

I have Word 2003. When I go to open a file/doc or save a doc my computer
freezes up. It just started this. Has been working without a problem for a
year.

Thank you so much for your reply. It worked! I wasn't sure how to set the
Value data to 1, but I right-clicked the value above it to see how that one
was typed. I then right-clicked the value that I just created and typed 0000
01 00 00 00.

Actually, you can just right-click on the key, choose Modify, then type 1 in
the Value box.
