Default date formating in mail merge

I have tried to get Word mail merge to recognize dates from an excel
spreadsheet using switches & changing to the DDE conversion option...no luck.
The switches return the data the same as without it, which is in a number
value format. When I try to choose the DDE conversion, Word gives me an
error that it cannot communicate with Dynamic Data Exchange...I am utilizing
Word & Excel 2003. Any suggestions?
