Default How to make equations on multiple lines align on the = sign?

Earlier - in Word 2003, it was possible to put multiple lines in a single
equation object, and then align the equations on the '=' sign... I am unable
to put multiple lines in a single equation object (the solution posted by
dldaws below creates a new one) - and thus am not able to align on '=' sign.

Can someone help me here?

Use Shift+Enter to type the multiple lines. Once they're all in place, select
all the lines and then right-click and choose "Align at =".
