Default Linking custom headings to captions

I'm writing a document in which I have separate numbered and un-numbered
headings. "Heading 1" is the un-numbered heading and I created "Heading 1
Numbered" for those chapters I want to be numbered.

I'd like to have the captions reflect the chapter number. But I'm getting
the message that there is no chapter number to include in the caption. That
must mean that the caption is looking for a number from an un-numbered
"Heading 1", when I want to get the number from my custom heading "Heading 1
Numbered".

It seems like I need the 'Chapter starts with style' field in the Caption
Numbering box to refer to my "Heading 1 Numbered", but there are only basic
choices of Headings 1-9, and I can't add my custom one to the list. Any
suggestions on getting to where I want to be?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Use Heading 1 as the numbered style and define another style (identical but
unnumbered and *not* based on Heading 1) for the unnumbered headings.

WG, LI:

It may depend on which version of Word you're using. I only use Word 2000
and in that version there is no way to add custom styles to the list of
styles that can be used as prefixes. You MUST use the built-in headings with
OUTLINE numbering assigned to them to accomplish this.

It may be possible that later versions of Word let you add custom styles to
the list, but I think you'd have to assign them a level other than body text.
In Word 2000 this is in the Paragraph dialog box, and is called Outline Level.

It is possible to manually simulate or approximate this prefixing using your
own SEQ numbers for the headings. You can even have these appear correctly in
the built-in TOC and Index fields. But it is considerably more work than just
flip-flopping your use of styles to Heading 1 and Heading 1 Unnumbered.

Thanks, that did the trick. With this piece of advice and Shauna Kelly's
how-to, I daresay I might finally understand this numbering thing.
