I need to know how to protect a document as a "read only" - but not using the

If the purpose is to prevent others from changing your document, there's
nothing you can do to prevent it completely. If it's just so they don't mess up your document, send it as a .pdf file. -- JoAnn Paules MVP Microsoft [Publisher] ~~~~~ How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/KB/555375 "etr" wrote in message ... This would be used for an in-house template. The idea is to use the template
and modify as necessary, but being forced to save it as a new document so as to save the template in original form. The .pdf version would not work in this scenario. You can right click the document and go to properties and click the read-only
there, but it is just as easy for someone to unclick it. This will work for what you want it to though "etr" wrote: This would be used for an in-house template. To do this you create a true template (.dot file), which users select from
the New (or Templates) dialog. The default action for .dot files is New rather than Open, so the template is never touched. You can make the template read-only if desired, but it shouldn't be necessary. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...platePart1.htm -- Suzanne S.
