Default Font Problem in Outlook with Word as E-mail Editor

We are using Office XP.
We have Outlook set to use Word as it's e-mail editor.
When we create a new e-mail message in Outlook, the font is coming out as a
pale yellow color. In addition, the screen view has been changed to display
gridlines, which we do not want! We have tried changing the default font back
to Automatic or Black color. We have changed the View back to Normal to get
rid of the gridlines. However, we cannot get the font color to change to
black. When we choose Automatic, we still get the pale yellow font color.
No matter what we do the problem keeps occuring. The only resolution was to
turn off Word as the E-Mail Editor. This made the problem go away. However,
we really want to use Word as the E-mail editor.

PS All was working fine up until a few days ago when this problem started
happening.

Any suggestions for how to fix? Thank for your help.
