how can I type a 1 cent sign instead of using the $ all the time

To type the ¢ symbol, hold the Ctrl key while you press the slash ( / ) key;
then release both and press the c key. Or hold down the Alt key while you type 0162 on the number pad (which is how I typed it in this reply). Or use the Insert Symbol dialog.
