Default Notepad.exe interfering with word docs

When I open up existing word docs I get a message that it cannot find
notepad.exe to open doc. I can open the same doc if I open word first, then
the doc. This occurred after I copied my own word docs from another computer,
and loaded them onto my computer. I haven't used notepad as other docs were
all written in word. What has happened and how do I fix it?

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools Folder Options. Click File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOC extension. Currently this (it seems) shows Notepad as
the application that opens DOC files. Change it to Word.

This explains what has happened, but not why. Copying files from one
computer to another won't, in itself, have been the cause.
