Default adding footnotes in Word creates page spacing problems

i'm trying to add footnotes to an existing Word doc. when i insert footnote,
the pages split. it splits above and below the footnote.

Do you have columns on the page?

i just read a post under the general questions section and i think this helped.
there was a lot of Space before the separator. once i clicked reset for the
footnote separator it got rid of the extra space. thanks for your help.
