I am trying to create a TOC for multidocuments (Word 2003) using the
procedure in TechTrax by J. West (RD fields). All files are in the same
folder, so am using \f. When I press F9, I get the message "Word experienced
an error trying to open the file". When I go Alt/F9 I get "Error. Cannot open
file referenced on page 2". What am I doing wrong? Is it with my TOC
settings? Help!!!

My guess is that there is an error in one of your RD fields. You
probably typed a path or filename incorrectly. If all files are in the
same folder, then you don't need to include the path in the RD field.

By the way, there is no such thing as a \f switch in an RD field. Maybe
you are confusing an RD field with a TOC field, which could have a \f
switch?

Thanks. I have checked and rechecked spelling, spaces etc. My field coedes
(limiting to one chaper) are as follows:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \f \h \z }
{ RD \f "Emergency Response Contact List" }

I have tried the chapter name with and without a .doc, with and without
spaces. I even tried removing the \f for the chapter and even used the entire
path. No go. The TOC itself is page 2 of a file (Cover Page and Table of
Contents). The TOC field code comes in automatically and I have not altered
it. My TOC Settings (options) have the Styles and Table entry fileds checked.
Do you see any obvious errors here?

Try changing the RD field to
{ RD "Emergency Response Contact List.doc" }

I take that back... an RD field can have a \f switch, but in your case,
I don't think it is necessary.

Thanks. Seems if I open each file and id the 1st line as a Level 1 outline,
then things seem to work. But I didn't think I should have to do that, that
the TOC would just use the file name. Or am I still doing something wrong?
