Default how to cross reference an equation and only have it put in the eq.

Given an equation with a caption that says something like (2.1), how do I
insert a cross-reference to that equation and have it put ONLY the number,
i.e., 2.1??? instead of all the junk that it wants t o put in.....

On the Insert cross-reference dialog, make a selection from the 'Insert
reference to' drop-down.
