Hello Friends,

I would be ever so greatful if I could use your expertise with Word 2007. I am presently writing a research report. I have a Title Page and a Contents Page on the first two pages, and my "introduction" starts on the third page. I would like to know how to have the pages start at "page 1" on my introduction page (without splitting the file into 2). Also I have my pages formatted as saying "1 of 13", "2 of 13" etc. if that helps.

These are the things you need to do:

- Separate the document into two sections.
- Unlink the headers and footers in the second section from those in the first
section, assuming you want different text in the two sections.
- Restart page numbering from 1 in the second section.
- Modify the field in the "Page X of Y" to show the number of pages in the
second section rather than the number in the whole document.

These steps will let you do them:

1. Put the cursor at the end of page 2 (after the end of the TOC field), go to
the Page Layout ribbon, and click Breaks Next Page. (If you already had a hard
page break there, delete it.)

2. Open the header on page 3 (the first page of the new Section 2), which causes
the Header & Footer Tools ribbon to display.

3. Click the Link To Previous button in the Navigation group to turn it off.
Click the Go To Footer button, then click Link To Previous to turn it off for
footers as well.

4. If you want the header and/or footer in Section 1 to differ from the ones in
Section 2 (including being blank), modify them now. After turning off Link To
Previous, the headers/footers of Section 1 will no longer affect the ones in
Section 2.

5. With the cursor in the Section 2 header, click the Page Number button on the
Header & Footer Tools ribbon and choose Format Page Numbers. In the dialog, type
the number 1 in the Start At box and click OK.

6. Right-click the total number of pages in the "Page X of Y" numbering and
choose Toggle Field Codes. The result looks like {NUMPAGES}. Change it to
{SECTIONPAGES}. Then right-click it and choose Update Field.

Thanks very much for this, I got it to work perfectly , however this is more so down to the clairvoyance of your instructions rather than my skill. Appreciated.
