Is the content selected when you press the Spacebar? If so, this is what you
should expect if "Typing replaces selection" is checked on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options.

Default when spacebar is pressed content is deleted

You are in Overtype mode, probably as a result of pressing the Insert key. Press
the Insert key again to get out of Overtype mode (it's a toggle switch).
