I merged 2 word documents (in .rtf). Each had footnotes. The footnotes did
not merge. In other words, the document that was merged into the original
keeps old footnote numbers. I have tried everything on the help menu and
nothing helps.

Where did these files come from? Footnotes don't transfer between programs
especially well. Try saving them as .doc files first, then merging them.
