Default Strange characters in MS Word !!!

All of a sudden, all the new line characters in MS Word have been replaced by
some strange character and all spaces have been replaced by a dot (centered
dot). This happens in the typing view but not in the print preview view. I
have tried everthing possible - reinstallation of office, upgradation,
degradation restoring ... everything but to no avail.

Pls help me out.
