Default word uses 100% cpu resources

when ms word 2003 is open it is using 100% of cpu resources, even when not
being used. when working on a document, word responds very slowly. any
suggestions on what might cause this and how to resolve?

I found what was causing the problem. the computer had ATI Hydravision
desktop management application running. This appears in the processes list
as desk95.exe. Whenever Word is open desk95 would use approx 45% of CPU
resources and Word would use 45 to 50%. The Hydravision software was not
needed on this system. I deleted it and this resolved the issue.
