I am having problems printing with Microsoft sans serif.
It randomly prints strange characters over the page.

Any ideas?

Microsoft Sans Serif is a screen font. It won't print at all. Word is
substituting another font for printing, so you might as well choose another
font to begin with, and that way what you see on the screen will more
closely approximate what will print.
