Templates and Styles
I have a document based on a template I created. In document properties, it
correctly shows my template. I thought that as I'd been making style changes in the template, they also showed up in the document based on that template, but now I'm not sure. Certainly, now, as I make changes to styles in the Template, they are not appearing in the document based on that template. Is there any way I can be sure that the document accurately reflects the styles of its template? Thanks, Colin Word 2003, Windows XP, latest updates and SP's to all. |

Note that it generally a _bad_ idea to leave the option to update styles
from the template checked. Are you sure? What's the point of the checkbox under Tools | Templates and

If Word can't find your template, it will update your styles to those in
normal.dot. When you move it to a different computer this will happen. OK, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. For now, I'm just working
on my own computer. I'm not sure I'll ever share the template, but it's sure good to know. In general, I push docs to uneditable PDF's when I'm ready to distribute them. If that box is unchecked, can a document be distributed as a Word doc without being mangled on other machines (assuming at least that they have the same version of Word)? What about between Mac and PC, how good are those conversions and what happens to OLE objects (I guess that's getting a little off-topic, but I'm eager to learn)? There really isn't a conversion as such between Intel and Mac machines, the
Word programs on each read each other's files, assuming they can read the disk. The Word file format is the same (as of Word 97). With the box unchecked, a Word document will be "mangled" less. So I guess the Mac will choke on anything with an OLE object, since Mac's
don't support that all. Similarly, Windows computers will choke on Mac Word docs with embedded PS. Is that right? Read the disk? I've not seen a floppy drive on a new Mac this millennium. :-) I think most file exchanges are via a-mail or network shares, with some by CD (and, by default, Mac and Windows use the same format for CD's).
