I have a large (over 150 page) document that has paragraphs followed by
numbered lists. I'm using one of the canned 2007 Styles for the documents
overarching look.

I went into the Numbering Library and modified the Numbering format so that
each level of the multilevel list stepped in appropriately - 2 is flush left,
2.1 starts under the starting text of 2, 2.1.1 starts under the starting text
of 2.1 etc. This does make the latter numbers have small text areas, but it
gives the look I want.

Now, I have a problem. The document is not using the numbered list style I
selected any longer. If I start a new list in the document, I have to
reformat it by "Format Painting" over it after starting it. If I change an
existing list - the formatting goes haywire with different tab stops and
indents.

What am I doing wrong?

In order to reliably save and reuse multilevel lists, set them up as list
styles: On the Home tab, click Multilevel List, and then click Define New
List Style. Type a name for your new list style. Click Format, Numbering;
Word displays the multilevel list dialog box where you can specify all
aspects of numbering. In particular, this is where you define the
indentation for each numbering level. Also, be sure to associate a unique
paragraph style with each level; that makes it so much easier to apply
numbering to text.

First, thanks for the prompt response! Second, I went back and looked and
realized that I had created a multilevel list. However, when I look at the
Home Ribbon - the number list is highlighted.

I went to Multilevel lists and set up a new list. I cleared the formatting
on one of my small lists and then set it to the new list style. It still
shows Numbering List instead of Multi-Level list. I'm researching how to set
up the list levels as styles. I'll keep digging.

You will have to use Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New List Style to
create a list style. After it has been created, your list style will be
available under "List Styles" at Home tab | Multilevel List. You can
right-click the preview and choose Modify whenever you want to modify the
list.

To clarify, there are two aspects of styles he there is the list style,
which includes all of the list formatting, and there are paragraph styles
that you can (and should!) assign to each level of the list style.

List styles can be copied between documents and templates as any other
styles. Note, however, that it will be safer to create the list style
directly in a template; then create documents based on that template for
easy reuse of the list format.
