Default How do I get Normal view to stay the default?

I use Word 2000 and have always had new and previously saved documents
opening in normal view by default. Now, quite suddenly, when I re-open
documents they sometimes open in print layout view. I know it's easy to
change the view to normal on the screen but I'd rather not have to keep doing
this. Can anyone help me please? I haven't (knowingly) made any changes to
anything that could have caused this.
