Default Why is word 2003 creating huge files

I am having great problems using word 2003.

It is turning 140kB files into 16MB files. It is bizarre! Minor edits are
tking ages to complete(upwards of 15min) and all system CPU resources are
being used up. I even took a 126kB ten page document and broke it down into
ten separate files, the result? each page became a file of 13MB!

Has anyone else experienced this problem? How can it be solved?

I'm having a similar problem. I have a document with a number of screen shots
and jpegs in it. It's eating up a lot of disk space, at least 8 MB. The
document is 116 pages.

I've broken it down into different sections but there will come a time when
I will need to combine them.

Any assistance would be very welcome.
