Default Word docs wont stay open

Opening a Word document from any folder on C: Word opens OK, then the doc
opens for up to a minute then Word closes closing the doc and not saving any
changes.

Garfield,
I followed all the instructions that apply to my situation but with no luck,
the problem remains. I prepared a letter in detail but I can't paste it to
this message.
The salient points include, that I can't find Word Startup in spite of
Searches. etc. Registry: \...\Options\STARTUP-PATH doesn't exist.
I will appreciate any further suggestions.
