Default Default settings for new doc, Word 2007

In the past, changing the fonts, etc. in normal.dot would determine the
settings for a new doc when Word first opened. I have created a normal.dotx,
placed it in a subdir with my other templates, and changed the template path
(Word options - Advanced - File locations - User templates).

While I am able to select normal.dotx, along with my other templates, when I
first start Word, it is not using normal.dotx. Please advise.

Only Word can create a normal template, which it will whenever the template
is not present in the user templates folder. You can edit that template in
Word just as in earlier versions.

Further, although Word can base documents on normal.dotx like any other
template, the template that Word creates for itself is normal.dotm -- the "m"
denoting a macro-enabled template.
