Default Customized Quick Access toolbar disappears

I have created a new document and saved it in 2007 format. I've then added
specific commands to the Quick Access toolbar for that document. Again, saved
the document and then closed it. Next time I open it the toolbar with my
commands are all there, but after a brief period of time, the custom tools
disappear.

any ideas??

If you saved the changes to the QAT to a particular document, it will only
be available when that document is the current document.

Yes, I've done that. The QAT is there with the "custom" tools when I open the
document, but after working on the document for awhile, the "custom" tools
disappear.

No, I am still trying to pinpoint what triggers it to disappear. I am
creating shapes in a drawing canvas in the document. However, I am also
working on another Word document as well. I wondered if it had something to
do with toggling? The second document does not have any tools added to the
QAT.

No, the QAT for one document (or template) should not be able to affect the
QAT for another (except in the sense that the QAT of a certain document is
only available when that document is current, of course).

Which commands did you add to the QAT? Are you saying that they actually
disappear or that they are greyed out?

No, they actually disappear. I have added Page Orientation, New Drawing
Canvas, WordArt, Print, and Exit Word commands. I am not in compatability
mode, it is not saved as a template or in some obsure location - it is saved
locally. I have all the updates for Windows XP and Office 2007.

I have not had any problems at all customizing QATs in PowerPoint. I open
PPT and save a document, then add commands to the QAT for THAT document by
using the "Customize Quick Access toolbar..." command. Which is the same as
what I am doing in Word...

Since this is a document that is going to be distributed and used as a
template by very young users, I need to feel secure that the QAT will stay
intact.

Hi Laurie,

After they've disappeared, if you go to the Customization dialog
(Alt, F, I, C) and look at the listing for QAT items in that document or template are they still listed?

Is the document you're switching with using a different template as the basis for the document than the one with the custom QAT in
it and does the other one also have a document specific set of QAT content?

Do you have Office 2007 Service Pack 1 installed?

Hi,
No, all of the commands i've added are no longer listed.
The document that I am switching to uses a different template than the one
that is having the disappearing issue, and it does not have a customized QAT.

Yes, I have Office 2007 SP1 installed.

Hi Laurie,

Are you able to provide a link for the templates/documents you're using? I've not been able to 'lose' the document based QAT
choices when using different documents with/without QAT items based on different templates.

Are there any Add-ins being used in Word by any chance? Are these complex templates or are they being saved at any point in a
previous Word version?

Are you using the Office clipboard between these documents?

Hi Bob

I am working with a drawing canvas. I was able to add a banner shape that I
formatted and then added text to. I then double clicked on the banner to
produce the contextual tab and noticed the QAT tools disappear.

The only add-in that I have is Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro. This document is being
designed for Primary grade school children so there is nothing elaborate
going on. I have posted the document here.
http://www.technokids.com/laurie/wanted.docx
The document was created from scratch using Word 2007.

Hi again Bob
I just recreated the document and added the custom tools again. I then
attempted to add objects etc. to the drawing canvas. I find that when I
switch to another Word document, this is when the custom tools disappear.
Returning to the doc in question does not restore the tools.

If I save the document, close it and reopen, the tools do not return either.

Hi Laurie,

My first thought was that it might be related to the Adobe add-in (sort of a tradition of MS/Adobe 'who wins' things there g) but
I did duplicate the behavior with no Adobe in sight, but not with a consistent set of steps so far, but still looking

If you save as a template so that you can then create a new document based on that template, do the new documents exhibit the same
behavior?

Was having a drawing canvas already in the otherwise blank document a feature you need rather than just having it available on the
custom QAT entries?

Are there QAT customizations in the Normal.dotm template and in Word.qat as well that are in play in your situation?

How do you normally open the document and is it always saved on the local hard drive or is it opened from other locations?

Hi Bob
You've certainly given me a few things to try. However, I am glad you were
able to duplicate the behaviour.

I have not tried saving it as a template. The file, in the end, is marked as
read-only forcing the user to rename the document when saving. I will turn it
into a template and see what happens.

The drawing canvas is necessary as the document will be used by Grade 2
students. having them resize the canvas to fit the page can prove a bit
challenging for them.

There are no QAT customizations in the Normal.dotm template.

The document is opened by double clicking (again for ease by Grade 2
students) rather than opening Word first and then browsing to its location.
Presently the file is stored locally in my Documents folder, however,
ultimately would end up in a server/shared location for use by students.

I have customized the QAT in other documents in Word, PowerPoint and Access
and this (so far) is the only document that has had trouble with the QAT.

I will get back to you after changing it into a template. wish me luck!

Laurie

Hi again Bob

I saved the document as a template and have successfully been able to create
several documents without losing the QAT. I really don't understand why this
document in particular caused me such grief with the QAT.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

If you discover a reason why the document (docx) would not retain the QAT
I'd be interested in finding out.

Thanks again.
