Default word won't keep the options, after closing.

to use some options, (tools - customize- and check your boxes. )
well after closing the program, all the options are undone. short of un-and
reinstalling, any help.

If your normal.dot global template changes aren't taking it might be because
your normal.dot file is locked (computer locked up with Word open). You
will need to close Word, open Windows Explorer, and do a search for
"normal.dot". Make sure your settings will search for hidden files/folders.
You should find a file named "~$normal.dot". Select and delete this file.
Re-open Word, make your changes, close Word, re-open it again to see that
they took this time. By the way, you will also find "normal.dot". Leave it
alone and ONLY delete the temp file (~$normal.dot).
