I have set up a new caption reference type called "appendix" so that I can
autonumber and cross-reference my appendices. Crossreferencing works fine
(i.e., Appendix" appears in the drop down box for cross-reference type) until
I save and close the document. The next time I open it "Appendix" no longer
appears in the drop down box. The captions remain in the document and are
properly numbered. I have to go through the caption process with one of the
appendices before it shows up in the dropdown box again. Any ideas on how to
fix this?

Caption labels are stored in normal.dot (the blank document template).
Make sure to save normal.dot after you've added the label. If you are
having trouble with this, you can force a save by holding Shift as you
access the file menu: you'll see the Save All command, which you can
then click.

Note that if you are working with multiple computers, the label must
be created on all of them.
