email merge
Hi, I'm trying to do a email merge in word 2003. The directions say to go to
Tools, Letters and Mailmerge and under select document type, click E-mail message. The problem is under select document type, I have letters, envelopes, labels, and directory. How can I add email messages? |

Use a letter type mail merge main document and when you go to execute the
merge, one of the available destinations will be email. When you select that destination, a dialog box will appear in which you select the field in the data source that contains the email addresses. -- Hope this helps. Please reply to the newsgroup unless you wish to avail yourself of my services on a paid consulting basis. Doug Robbins - Word MVP "Mindy" wrote in message ... First, make sure that the e-mail program you want to use is set up to be the
default e-mail program (e.g. via Internet Explorer Tools . Internet Options Programs. Find the WIN.INI file in your Windows folder (typically c:\WINDOWS), make a backup copy of it, and open it in Notepad. Ensure that the following text is in there, and add it if not [Mail] MAPI=1 CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll CMC=1 MAPIX=1 MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1 OLEMessaging=1 You will need to close all copies of Word before this change has a chance of taking effect. It is probably safest to restart Windows to be completely sure. If that isn't enough, you may need to edit the registry; however see how you get on with the above first. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Mindy wrote: Hi, I'm trying to do a email merge in word 2003. Word should work with either of them, but it merge to "HTML format" when it

I modified the file but it still doesn't give email as a way to merge.

Peter Jamieson knows more about this, so maybe he will chip in? However from
one of his earlier posts - You will need to edit the registry. Proceed with caution! In your Windows folder, locate and run regedit.exe. If you're on an older version of Windows you might need to use regedt32.exe. Look for a key called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mi*crosoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem I would be surprised if it was not there in recent versions of Windows, but if it is not, add it. If it is there, I would expect to see a. A subkey called MSMapiApps b. A number of "values" with the same names as are in the above list - MAPI, MAPIX etc. c. An additional value called InstallCmd If you cannot see the values, you need to add them. For each of the values in the above list d. Right click "Windows Messaging Subsystem" and select New|String Value. Note that although some of these items have numeric values, they should all be entered as String Values. e. Enter the name, as above f. Double click on the name. A dialog box appears. Enter the value (e.g. for the name CMCDLLNAME, enter mapi.dll) and click OK g. You may also need to create the InstallCmd value, although I rather doubt it. I am less sure about this and about what should go in there. On my system, the value is: rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf When you have done them all, press F5. Then close all copies of Word and restart it - or restart Windows, then restart Word and see if the e-mail option has appeared. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Mindy wrote: I modified the file but it still doesn't give email as a way to merge. Yes, for Word 2003 I believe it's the registry you need to fix rather than
WIN.INI. It may be easier to import the necessary values into the registry - there's now a page at http://tips.pjmsn.me.uk/t0002.htm which covers the existing ground and provides the contents of a suitable ..reg file for copying/pasting into a Notepad file. I just checked again here and it seems OK, so...
....it is possible that you do not have permission to update this particular part of the regiistry, e.g. if you are not logged in with Administrator permissions. Mindy,
I'm confused. Last night I checked right before I went to bed, and you had a very detailed explanation but it's not here today. Do you have any idea what happened to it? ? No. I am not sure which detailed explanation you mean, because I have posted reasonably detailed replies to all your messages so far, and I can see them all in this message thread. I have reposted the link to my website article, and my most recent reply below. If this message does not contain what you need, ask again. 1. My website page is at:- http://tips.pjmsn.me.uk/t0002.htm 2. My most recent message replied to your " so it should look like this?" and said: I believe so, except... OK, just to be sure I didn't miss anything really obvious, I double-checked
here with a. Windows XP b. Outlook Express configured as my default e-mail program c. no [mail] section in WIN.INI It appears that exactly one value in the registry makes Word display the relevant e-mail option, and that is the MAPIX item. So just in case there has been any miscommunication, one last thing you could try is to edit copy the following text into a .reg file (let's call it mapix.reg) and use the File|Import menu option in the registry editor to import the value. The file is as follows - copy/paste it into a Notepad file. There should be 4 lines. The second line is blank. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem] "MAPIX"="1" Here, I usually have a full version of Office including Outlook, which may be what is causing the difference. Unfortunately, although it is clear that Word looks at the MAPIX option, I do not know what else it checks before displaying the relevant options. Where would you suggest getting further help? I suggest that you go to http://support.microsoft.com and choose the first option in the section that says: --------------------------- Need more help? Contact a support professional by e-mail, online chat, or telephone. ..Select a product to start ..View support requests you have submitted online --------------------------- There may be an equivalent page on the Microsoft website in your country or region. If you do that, I strongly recommend that you draw their attention to this newsgroup thread to avoid wasting a lot of time. Sorry we did not succeed, Peter Jamieson "Mindy" wrote in message ... If I click on that, on the right-hand side of the window it has (default) REG_5Z (value not set), choosusr.dll REG_5Z, inetsw95.exe REG_5Z, and MAP1 REG_5Z Your directions say (I'm on letter G and H in your directions) to name as above . What name? and what value? Okay, I deleted the mail section in the win.ini file. Do I need to delete
the keys I already put in the reg file? Also, do I need to make a new key and call that mapix.reg? I would like some more details before I proceed. "Peter Jamieson" wrote: OK, just to be sure I didn't miss anything really obvious, I double-checked here with a. Do I need to delete
the keys I already put in the reg file? No. Also, do I need to make a new key and call that mapix.reg? No. When you import the .reg file, the registry editor will create the key (and any bits of the "path" to the key) that it needs. If there is no MAPIX key, it will create it. If there is an existing MAPIX key in the right place, it should overwrite the value. It will not overwrite any other keys or values or delete any other keys or values. Okay, I deleted the mail section in the win.ini file. OK, you din't need to do that (I only did it to make sure that it was the MAPIX key in the registry that was having the desired effect). I would put the entries back into WIN.INI. By the way, if you do end up going to Microsoft technical support (or anywhere else) and find the solution to this problem I would appreciate it if you could post the answer here.
