Default table of contents

i have a table of contents in my word document. i would like there to be
spaces between each line, so i go through and manually hit enter because i
just want the space to be between page numbers, i dont want the whole table
of contents double spaced. however, i take the time to do that, but when i
click on update field, update entire table, it takes away all of the
formatting i just applied. is there any way i can up date the entire table
and keep the spacing i want?

no -- not unless you do it "properly" (in the Word sense of things).

Like many other things, the key to this problem is _styles_. The
formatting of an entry in the TOC is governed by the TOC style of the
appropriate level. Per default, this means that a "Heading 1" entry is
set in the style "TOC 1", H2--TOC2, etc.

So the solution to your problem lies in adjusting the TOC style. If you
have trouble with locating the style, make sure to mention the version
of Word you are using.
