Default Header and Footer

Using MS Word 2003, when I activate the header and footer boxes from the view
menu, they are only visible when the plicrow (paragraph symbol) is engaged.
The symbol also is listed in the header and footer boxes and I can't
eliminate it. All I'm trying to do is to insert page numbers in the footer of
a document after one section break. Any assistance with this issue is greatly
appreciated.

Suzanne,

My problem is that the Header and Footer on the view menu is not visible
when I activate it. The only thing that happens is the page where I want to
activate the H&F "jumps", but no H&F box or toolbar is visible. I am baffled
at why Word refuses to activate the H&F command.

I received comprehensive instructions from a community member in this NG
about using a macro to activate the H&F toolbar. However, when I entered the
command in the immediate window of vba, a run-time "automation" error
occurred. So I am still stuck. Thanks for you responses.

Default Header and Footer

Hi Charles,

In a inconsistent way, if I double-click on the Header and Footer (H&F)
command from the view menu, the H&F toolbar will be visible along with a
small flashing box as if a page number is requested to typed. However, when
I type a page number and close the H&F toolbar, the same number will appear
on each page throughout the document. That's case one.
For case two, when I double-click on the box for the page number (when the
H&F toolbar is visible), the full H&F boxes become visible along with the
pilcrow (paragragh mark) inside and {PAGE}. Moreover, there is an anchor
symbol outside the H&F boxes that seems to be connected to {PAGE} because
when I click on the anchor symbol to delete it, a rectangular box appear
around {PAGE}. Also, the entire document shows the paragraph mark and other
symbols. Thus, IT APPEARS THAT THE H&F BOXES' VISIBILITY IS CONNECTED TO THE
PILCROW (PARAGRAPH MARK) BECAUSE WHEN THE H&F BOXES ARE VISIBLE, I CAN CLICK
ON THE PILCROW AND IT (THROUGHOUT THE DOCUMENT) ALONG WITH THE H&F BOXES WILL
DISAPPEAR SIMULTANEOUSLY OR APPEAR SIMULTANEOUSLY WHEN THE PILCROW IS ENGAGE.
What a mess! Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Default Header and Footer

You've got three unrelated issues he

1. The display of pilcrows is toggled by the Show/Hide ¶ button on the
Standard toolbar; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.

2. The display of { PAGE } as opposed to the page number is toggled by
Alt+F9 (or checking the box for "Field codes" on the View tab of Tools |
Options).

3. The box around the page number is a frame; it is anchored to the header
or footer paragraph. You don't get a frame around a page number unless you
use Insert | Page Numbers, which isn't recommended, for a variety of reasons
(see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...yIndented.htm). When
you select the page number, you see the hashed border of the frame. A better
way to insert a page number is to use View | Header and Footer and then use
the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar. This puts
the number in the actual header/footer as opposed to in a frame anchored to
it. You can position it using the built-in tab stops or (if there's no other
text in the header/footer) with paragraph alignment (right, left, or
center).

Even in Print Layout view, you will not see any header or footer until one
is created. The View | Header and Footer command is somewhat misleading, as
it also means Create Header or Footer if you don't already have one. When
you select this command (FWIW, it is not necessary to DOUBLE-click on any
menu command; a single click suffices), the header pane will open,
surrounded by a broken-line box, and the Header and Footer toolbar will be
displayed. Once the header or footer has been created, you can double-click
on it in Print Layout view to edit it. For more, see

Thanks for the information Suzanne. However, I am still faced with my

Hi Charles,

I have isolated that my word document is corrupt in at least one paragraph
mark (pilcrow). When I show paragraph marks in the document, there is one at
the very top and bottom left of each page, which is dim. Page numbers also
are listed at the bottom of each page. Moreover, if I click on the pilcrow
at the top or bottom of a page, the header and footer toolbar will pop up
along with the boxes. Yet when I hide the pilcrow, the header and footer
toolbar and boxes will not activate. Any suggestions on how to fix a corrupt
document?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Generally you copy your document, a bit at a time into a new document. You
do not want any section breaks, which includes the last pilcrow in the
document, copied into the new document. Unfortunately, this is also all of
the headers and footers.

Default Header and Footer

Hi Charles,

I copied very carefully (made sure not to copy the last paragraph mark at
the document's end) information from the corrupt document into a new
document, harmonized the styles throughout, and saved it. However, I still
have the same original problem which is that the header and footer's
activation is only visible when the paragraph marks are shown. How the two
are tied together is a mystery and seems irreconcilable. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Default Header and Footer

Charles,

As an addendum to the message sent today, I have discovered that the new
document created from the corrupt one will activate the header and footer
toolbar in the first section, but not the second one. It appears that the
corruption carried over from section two in the corrupt document into the new
one as well. Any insights on how to proceed with the de-corruption? Thanks!

Generally you copy your document, a bit at a time into a new document.

You
do not want any section breaks, which includes the last pilcrow in the
document, copied into the new document. Unfortunately, this is also all

of
the headers and footers.

Default Header and Footer

Suzanne,

The PROBLEM has been solved. Before reading your reply to my post today, I
copied w/o section breaks and the final paragraph mark and pasted into a new
document again. However, this time I created a header and footer with page
numbers BEFORE pasting to the target new document. Afterward, a second
section break was inserted and page numbers were formatted to fit it (section
break 2).

If memory serves me correctly, you mentioned in an earlier reply that one
has to create a header and footer in order to be able to activate it. I
failed to heed your advice and was trying to create the header and footer ex
post copying from a corrupt source document and pasting to a new target
document. I have learned so much about styles and formatting and headers and
footers since "peeking" into the community. Learning is a lifelong process
is one is open to it. I have been using word for a few years and never
understood the difference between style formatting versus direct formatting,
not to mentioned the simple task of creating a header and footer BEFORE
composing a new document that includes section breaks. That has all changed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you and Charles for all the assistance with this
seemingly insurmountable issue. Keep up the good work!

Default Header and Footer

Glad you finally got it sorted. Although creating the header and footer may
have been the trick, it's also possible that just adding some content did
it. I do know that if you use Insert | File to insert a document into a
completely blank document, it will take on the formatting of the inserted
file, in effect including the final paragraph mark (which I consider
perverse). If you press Enter a couple of times before inserting the file,
then it doesn't bring its section formatting with it. Adding a header may
have accomplished the same thing.
