I am attempting to create a master document and have never done it
before. This is a very long and very important document that will be
distributed to the entire department and i really would like to not
embarass myself and i have until Nov. 1 to have it done. Can someone
please help? I do not even know where to begin.

Word Heretic might come along and help you out, but most of the people
posting here donąt know much about master documents, because:

Default Master Documents... Help!!

OK Thank you. I will check out those articles for sure. Maybe this
will help... the problem I am having is; i have a very long document
with many sections. I need to get these sections to various people in
my department to edit them and then send them back to me to ultimately
create a final finished product. I do not want to send each person the
whole document, only their portion to complete. I also want to be able
to password protect the master. Someone suggested I do a master
document, which sounds like a good idea, but I find it very
complicated. Is there perhaps an easier solution?

Sorry, I don't have an answer because I don't use Master Documents. However,
you may need the reason I don't more than you need an answer. "Master
Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only
doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the limited
exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these newsgroups
is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to destroy your
document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are not even
working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said that there
are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that
will be corrupt soon. See
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...ocsCorrupt.htm for more
information on what goes wrong, and
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Genera...MasterDocs.htm for ideas on how
to salvage what you can. See
http://www.techwr-l.com/techwhirl/ma...masterdocs.doc for
Steve Hudson's instructions if you are willing to follow them very
carefully.

Look into the IncludeText field which lets you incorporate separate files in
one final file.
