I have a user that is copying and pasting a (largish) grid from a webpage
(file size around 500k) in Word 2007 and then doing a mail merge with that to
Outlook 2007. When they are finished stepping through the wizard, Word does a
saving bar at the bottom and ends up using 99% cpu cycles and then dying. The
contacts list is around 4400 names and at best around 25 get out before the
whole shebang dies. This going through our Exchange server 2003 via POP.
I should note that when doing a mail merge with a 'regular' Word doc, it
seems to go much smoother. When it is just a bit of text, I see it
'temp-saving' the file over and over, but when it has some substance, that
'temp-saving' is just killing the computer basically.
Basically I am trying to figure out if the problem is with the pasting of
web page content (with links etc...) is causing the break or if it is just
something with the sizes involved. I should note that she did this same
procedure using an attached pdf instead of the word doc (not really using the
mail merge fields, just using that interface to launch the mail) and those
failed as well, but with that one she got back 'header too large-limit 32k'
messages.

A number of other people have reported similar problems with only 30-40
email merges going through. I was trying to find out a bit more about this
but had not been able to replicate the problem. Can you provide a crash ID
(from Application Event Logs in the Event Viewer) - someone at MS should be
able to see if the problem is already being investigated as a consequence of
automated arror reporting.

I'll have a go with a mail merge main document created in a similar way to
yours and see if I can trigger a crash and get an ID that way.

Unfortunately, mine seems to work OK even doing that, I haven't tried
merging more than 100 records as everyone else with this problem reports a
crash at somewhere between 20 and 40.

So if you have a crash ID, so much the better!

That is one of the problems with this...there is no crash ID. Word churns at
100% cpu for a while and eventually it gives up and stops doing the merge
with no error message. It just gives up. I did get one 'hung app' with a list
of items P1 windord P2 12.0.62.11.100
P3 ms0.dll
P4 12.0.16213.1000
P5-P10 NIL
but that certainly doesn't tell anyone much

Are you in a position to re-check this info? The suggestion is that the
version info. is incorrect (my guess is that "windord" should be "winword"
and that you may have had to copy the info. by hand)
