How can I add/insert a background into a word document

You can't really...backgrounds are not for Word docs, but rather are
for documents that you convert to web pages. However, you can get around that somewhat if you have some image you want to apply by inserting the image as a watermark or as an image in a TextBox and then typing on top of that image. It depends on your version of Word. Word 2002 allows you to use Insert=Background but it's not printable.
