Default How do I remove the 'dots' between every word

After writing a letter in Word 2002 SP3, I went back to reopen it and it now
had a dot between every word. Help said to click on 'show/hide', but there
was nothing there to remove dots. All it did was add and remove bullets. Any
attempts at writing anything in word now appears with dots. I must have
clicked on something but can't find what.
Can anyone help out a grumpy old man?

The article I was directed to by Stefan put me on the right track, and I am no

longer displaying any dots. Whether I will ever understand the rest of the
article remains to be seen! A very quick and accurate result. Thank you.
