Default unfamiliar "L" shapes in corners of page

There seems to be pale grey "L" shapes in the corner of each Word document. I
cannot find the source of these to remove them, and don't even know what
they are. They don't interfere with typed text, and seem to act as page
boundaries. After searching through the Help file, I didn't sort the problem
out. Any ideas? Thank you, Trudi.

This is caused by the multi-language settings in Windows.

Specifically, they're caused by having an Asian language enabled.

Go to Start Programs Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Tools
Language Settings. Select any Asian languages in the Enabled list and
click the Remove button.

If you do that and the lines don't go away, you'll have to edit the
registry to get rid of them. See this post:
