Default Ballooning file sizes in Word 2003?

I've got a document that only has text and tables in it (i.e., no pictures).
It used to be a very reasonable couple of hundred KB. Somehow, after someone
else opened and resaved it (also in Word 2003), the file size is now 60MB!
Versioning is off, quick saves are off, all tracked changes have been
accepted.

If I try to save it as an rtf, the file size balloons to 600MB (!). If I try
to save as an earlier version of Word, the save just fails completely . . .

Ideas?
