i have recovered word doc using a recovery program from a crash pc but i
cannot read these docs, everytime i open them it comes up with the file
conversion window. any advise please.

Try 'Recover text from any document' under 'Files of Type' drop down on the
File Open dialog. If that fails, you'll need to restore the file from the
last backup before the crash. If that fails (or you don't have one), drink
two margaritas, sacrifice a goat, then start again.
