Default Files change to "Read Only" while working on them.

Recently we have been having a lot of Read Only problems with Word 2002
on Windows XP. Files opened off the server will give the message " The
document file name is locked for editing by another user." Even though
the file has not been in use for some time. I've searched the server
to see if their are owner files or other temporary files that are
hanging up, but haven't seen any.

More weird is that many times users are opening a file with full
read/write ability, and then having it suddenly turn into a Read Only
copy after working on it for a few minutes. Sometimes it will still
let the user save even though it claims to be read only, other times
they have to save with another filename. I've seen some mention of
similar problems on the groups, but not seen a resolution yet. I have
one user who says this has happened to him for at least a year, but in
the last couple of weeks it has started happening frequently to
multiple users.

Any ideas?
