Default TOC Displays the Number 3 for all page numbers

I have Word 2003, professional version. Every once in a while, my TOC changes
all the numbers to 3. They way I fix it is I right click on my mouse and
click on update field - page numbers only.

Is a bug in word? How do I fix it? This does not happen all the time. Other
users have the same problem, but again, not all the time...

Reading Layout could be the cause of this problem. You can turn it off
on the General tab of ToolsOptions, by clearing the check box for
"Allow starting in Reading Layout."

Stefan,

Thanks for the quick response. I have made the setting change and will
monitor over the next few days as this issue is intermittent. I will send a
post back by the end of the week, if not earlier.

Thanks again,

Larry

Hi Stefan,

Looks like your suggestion fixed the problem. Thank you. I have been
monitoring the last few days and have not noticed any occurences of the
problem. I do have several questions:

Why does this only happen with Word 2003 Professional Edition?
Is this issue something unique to me and other users who have the same
version of word? I do know that it has occurred with at least one other
person. I do not know what version they are using.
Should I advise users to peform the same fix with anyone using Word 2003
Professional?
Will this issue be addressed in the next version of Word?

Any other information you can provide would be helpful and much appreciated.

Thank you!

Reading Layout view was introduced in Word 2003, so the issue is not

Will this issue be addressed in the next version of Word?

Apparently some people *like* Reading Layout view, but if you find it causes
problems in the documents you exchange with others, then, yes, you might
want to advise those with Word 2003 to disable the option.

Well, clearly this isn't caused by Reading Layout view (since Word 2000
doesn't have that feature), but it might be a variation on the "page number
0" problem described at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumber0.htm

Since I use tables and page numbers in my footers I thought that was the

Is a bug in word? How do I fix it? This does not happen

all
the
time. Other
users have the same problem, but again, not all the

time...

Since I use tables and page numbers in my footers I thought that was the
problem. But no, I took out the table and I still have the problem. My TOC
ends up with a 2 and all the rest 3s. I have to renumber then avoid

Preview.
Any other suggestions?

Well, clearly this isn't caused by Reading Layout view (since Word 2000
doesn't have that feature), but it might be a variation on the "page

number
0" problem described at

Sorry about the blank post, I was signing in and pressed the wrong

I
just wanted to say that I run Word 2000 and I get all threes in TOC

when I
go
to Print Preview.

Suzanne,

Thank you for your response. Can you answer my two other questions
please?

Should I advise users to peform the same fix with anyone using

Word
2003
Professional?
Will this issue be addressed in the next version of Word?

Plus, is this considered a bug or feature?

Hi Stefan,

Looks like your suggestion fixed the problem. Thank you. I

have
been
monitoring the last few days and have not noticed any

occurences
of
the
problem. I do have several questions:

Why does this only happen with Word 2003 Professional Edition?
Is this issue something unique to me and other users who have

the
same
version of word? I do know that it has occurred with at least

one
other
person. I do not know what version they are using.
Should I advise users to peform the same fix with anyone using
Word
2003
Professional?
Will this issue be addressed in the next version of Word?

Any other information you can provide would be helpful and

much
appreciated.

Thank you!

I've looked and responded. I see many problems in the file, but I have no
trouble updating the TOC.

Default TOC Displays the Number 3 for all page numbers

Hey - This is great to fix a single PC but we have roughly 400 PC's in use in
our organization, all of which use MS Office 2K3 Professional. Is there an
easy way to turn this off for a large number of users?

Cheers!
Ben

I have it and have never turned it on (since clicking on it once to
see what it did). Why would anyone even think of using it?
