Default WD2007 VBA: macro to use ALT select on first column?

I love the trick of using the ALT key to select a column of characters in Word. Is this supported in VBA at all? I tried to record a macro using the ALT select to grab the first column of each line, but it wouldn't record.

As far as I know, you can't mimic that type of selection in VBA.
