Default How can I create cross-references to multiple figures?

I want to refer to "figures 8 through 12" with the figure numbers in fields.
The standard method for cross-references would give "figure 8 through figure
12", which is too awkward for my taste.

You can do this. It seems a bit fiddly at first, but you'll soon get the
hang of it:

1. Insert the figure caption.

2. Insert the cross-reference. (IMPORTANT: This step is required because it
creates the bookmark.)

3. Go to the figure caption and select just the number.

4. Go to Insert | Bookmark, check the box for "Hidden bookmarks," and select
the radio button for "Location."

5. The bookmark that is highlighted will be the one for the figure caption
you have selected. Click Add to reapply the bookmark to the number only.

6. Repeat as needed for other captions.

7. Go back to your cross-references, type "figure" before them, and update
fields (F9) to update the cross-references.
