Default Unprotecting a document

I have a protected document that was sent to me, and I would like to save it
as a copy and modify it, but I can't. If I save as, it is still protected.
And it won't even let me copy and paste. Any other suggestions? Is there any
way around this? Thanks.

Version of Word? How is it protected?

Try creating a new document and inserting the old one using Insert File.
