Default Word 2003 Insert & Link pictures link only. Why?

We are trying to Insert & Link pictures in Word 2003 (worked fine in Word
2000), but the pictures just end up as embedded. Does anyone know why? Is
there a setting somewhere to control this?

Are your pictures wrapped? If so, you will not be able to see the field code
unless you make them inline first.

They aren't wrapped. I am able to read the field codes but the underlying
problem seems to be the spaces in the path and file name have been replaced
by a "%20" and this seems to break the link. If I edit the field code (not
something I want to do for all my pictures) and put the spaces back instead
of the %20 then the link works again.

Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing that is causing this to happen?

Thanks for your help!!

Word's handling of links in general can be very infuriating. There is a
setting in Tools | Options | General | Web Options | Files that may make a
difference. Try clearing the check box for "Update links on save" to see if
that helps at all. If not, keep in mind that, with field codes displayed,
you can use Find and Replace to replace %20 with a space, not that I'm
suggesting that this is desirable or should be necessary.
