Default Word "Save as" saves over original insead of making new doc

I have a Word 2003 doc that I need to save a few versions of. When I do Save
As on this doc it saves over the original. I do not get a new doc the way I
expect. Any ideas why this may happen.

Thanks

Hi John,

Using File=Save as you'll still need to change the file name to preserve both the current and an alternate version of the document.
The name change can be something as simple as adding v1 or v2 etc for each version as part of the file name.

There is also a 'versions' feature in Word's file menu but it's not very solid and can create huge documents by putting all versions
literally in one file.

Hello Bob,

I do change the name. I have tried many times. The odd thing is that when
I open the file propertiesm it always says that it is the original file...I
don't understand why.

Thanks for the help
