Default Spell check suggestions in wrong language

I use Word 2007 with the language settings set to English (U.S.).
Occasionally, the spell checker makes suggestions for English words in
another language (French, I think). I have never deliberately changed the
settings to another language. When I double-check the language settings
again, it still displays English (U.S.). I have tried to reset the language
(even though it correctly says "English (U.S.)," closed and then re-opened
Word, and even re-started the computer without successfully changing the
spelling suggestions to English (U.S.). This is intermittent and does not
occur in all documents. Any ideas why this may be happening, how I can fix
it, and how I can prevent it in the future? Thank you.

Thank you very much for the link. The article was interesting and useful, but
did not provide a solution to my problem. It appears that all my settings are
correct and I do not have any dictionaries in another language configured,
but I still see some very common English words with marked as mispelled with
French suggestions.

And you have ascertained that the language applied to those specific words
is in fact English?

Default Spell check suggestions in wrong language

Yes, the words flagged as possibly being misspelled were definitely English.
An example: "Properties." All suggestions for other spellings for that word
were definitely not English. It was also odd that though the word was used
multiple times in the document (all occurrences spelled correctly), only one
occurrance of that word was flagged as possibly being mispelled.

As a side note, I have had similar issues when a co-worker (native language
is Italian and I suspect may have had different language settings on his PC)
made changes to one of my documents. When I subsequently opened the document,
I had French (not Italian) spelling suggestions after he opened and saved the
document. I checked all my settings when I noticed that, thinking that his
settings may have overwrote my own, but my settings appeared to be correct.

With the document I originally submitted this post about, no one but me has
opened the file.

Thanks you for your assistance!

You are missing the point. Just because you have an English word in the
document, it does not mean that it will be formatted with the English
proofing language. Every separate character in the document can be formatted
with a different proofing language. Select the document content - CTRL+A -
(including the suspect word) and choose Set Language from the Review tab of
the ribbon. Check English US and uncheck Detect language automatically,
uncheck Do not check spelling and grammar.
